Physicians rewarded for "excellence of care"

“I was very pleased,” says Dr. Smith humbly. “It means that the people who take care of patients day-to-day appreciate what I do.”
Dr. Smith, an oncologist/hematologist at Medical Specialty Clinic, was honored during the full medical staff meeting in early 2004.
“Everyone kept asking me if I was going to attend,” recalls Dr. Smith. “I had no idea why people were interested in me being there.”
Jim Dockins, executive vice president of the hospital, presented the award to the speechless Dr. Smith.
“I enjoy what I do,” says Dr. Smith, who as an oncologist and hematologist treats cancer and blood disorders. “It’s not an easy subspecialty,” he adds. Many of the patients that Dr. Smith sees each day are terminally ill.
Dr. Smith is also the medical director of the hospital’s hospice program. “I will stay involved in hospice care until I retire,” he says.
Dr. Smith has been an integral part of the Jackson medical community since July 1979 when he helped to form Medical Specialty Clinic. He was one of the first medical subspecialists to practice in Jackson.
Over the years, Dr. Smith has seen major changes and improvements in patient care. Most procedures, for example, are now done on an outpatient basis, reducing overnight stays and added costs to the patient. “Medicine is focusing more on genetics, which will provide better treatments and prevention of disease,” says Dr. Smith. “Drugs over the next 15 years will target more specific diseases, helping patients even more.”
While Dr. Smith is a dedicated physician, his family is “the most important thing,” he says. “They keep me on course. They get me through tough times and are with me through happy times. My belief in God also is a great help to me in every aspect of my life.”
Dr. Smith is a physician whose daily practices hardly go unnoticed by his patients and the staff of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. “I enjoy the interaction with people – seeing people get better and being able to help those when things aren’t going well,” he says.
