Jeffrey Apple, M.D.
Dr. Apple, who is board certified in general and vascular surgery, added the specialty of vascular surgery to Jackson Surgical Associates when he joined the clinic in July 2007. Vascular surgeons are trained in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of peripheral vascular problems, which include the blood vessels of the arms, legs, neck and abdomen.
Dr. Apple is the first surgeon in Jackson to offer thoracic aortic stent grafting for thoracic aneurysms. Dr. Apple is from Dallas, Texas. He received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University. After completing medical school at the University of Texas HSC in San Antonio, he went on to residency at UT Southwestern/Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Before completing his fellowship in vascular surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, he served four years in the U.S. Navy as a staff general surgeon at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. During that time, he was deployed twice to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member in the Society of Vascular Surgery, Parkland Surgical Society and Alpha Omega Alpha.


Dean Currie, M.D.
Board certified in general surgery, Dr. Currie was raised in Jackson and joined Jackson Surgical Associates in 1990. He received his medical education at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and his residency in general surgery at the University of Texas in San Antonio. Dr. Currie has introduced new procedures to the Jackson medical community, including sentinel lymph node biopsy, which helps detect the spread of breast cancer. He was selected by his peers in 1996 to be listed in "the Best Doctors in America." Jackson-Madison County Hospital employees named Dr. Currie the 2008 Guest Excellence Doctor of the Year. The award is based on the physician's care and concern for patients, professionalism, integrity, respect for other health care professionals, and willingness to go beyond the scope of duty.

David Laird, M.D.
Dr. Laird is board certified in general surgery. A major in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Laird moved to Jackson in 2001 after serving as the Chief of Surgical Services at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, N.M. Dr. Laird is a medical graduate of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. His internship in general surgery was at Methodist Hospitals of Memphis; his residency was at the UT School of Medicine in Memphis. Jackson-Madison County Hospital employees named Dr. Laird the 2007 Guest Excellence Doctor of the Year.

David Villarreal, M.D.
A native of Corpus Christi, Texas, Dr. Villarreal received his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. His general surgery internship and residency were at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, La. He is board certified in general surgery.

Tom Edwards, M.D.
After more than 25 years in group practice, Dr. Edwards, a general and vascular surgeon, has started his own clinic.  He’ll continue to provide general, laparoscopic, vascular and general thoracic surgery in his solo practice at Regional Hospital of Jackson. Dr. Edwards was the first surgeon in West Tennessee to treat invasive cancer with lumpectomy, axillary dissection and radiation.  Today he treats his breast cancer patients with lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy and radiation. He was also the first person in Jackson to provide laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy. In 1980 and 1981, Dr. Edwards was chief surgery resident at the VA Hospital and then at the City of Memphis Hospital. In 1981, he started a surgical practice with Drs. Dodson, Crocker, and Scott. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Tania, four children and five grandchildren.  His hobbies include hunting, fishing, snow skiing, trail riding and raising horses.

General surgeons perform a variety of surgical procedures, including treating gallbladder disease, hemorrhoids, colon problems and peripheral vascular problems; repairing hernias; placing ports for dialysis; and removing breast masses.
